Mitigating Unconscious Bias in Academia: What’s My Share?

Implicit or unconscious biases can be described as the attitudes or stereotypes which affect our understanding, our actions, and decision-making processes in an unconscious manner. This means that even if we want to make the most accurate and fair decisions, we might still be in danger of falling into biases’ traps. Why is it therefore vital to become aware of our own biases, stereotypes, and privileges when we engage ourselves in research projects? How might our differences and similarities impact the ways in which we work, research, communicate, and socialize with each other?

This workshop for early career researchers aims at raising awareness of unconscious bias in higher education settings. It introduces participants to the origins and aims of the anti-bias approach, encourages critical self-reflection, and, drawing on academic studies as well as on practical examples, creates space for jointly developing initial strategies for mitigating possible effects of unconscious biases in academic settings.

Please note: This 3-hour format is designed as a training course. We will thus actively engage with each other (open questions, brainstorming phases, group exercises etc.). During this process, you are more than welcome to actively contribute with your curiosity, willingness to share experiences, and readiness for change in perspective.

Aims:

Participants …

  • –… know aboutthe origins and aims of the anti-bias approach in relation to the seven core dimensions of diversity
  • –… reflect their own experiences with unconscious biases
  • –… develop an awareness for how to mitigate biases in academic settings
  • –… collaboratively work on case studies and get to know good practices
  • –… develop first ideas on how everybody may contribute to more inclusive research environments

Methods:

Short inputs, interactive group exercises, brainstorming and reflection sessions, case studies and application examples

Target group:

Early career researchers, max. 25 participants
