Getting Your Idea Funded: Workshop on Scientific Grant/Fellowship Writing

organized by SFB 1381 PI Dr. Valérie Hilgers, Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics

What? A workshop designed to help early career researchers to write applications for third-party funding. (The workshop is not on application formalities or eligibility, which vary from funding agency to funding agency, but on scientific writing).

Who? Suited for senior SFB 1381 doctoral candidates and Postdocs applying for Postdoc fellowships, and senior Postdocs applying for grants.

When? The first part of the workshop will be held online on Friday, 06.05.2022, from 09:00 am to 12:00 pm. The second part will be held online on Friday, 13.05.2022, from 09:00 am to 12:00 pm.

A third time slot will be considered if required, depending on the number of attendees and their needs.

Contents:

First part: Dr. Valérie Hilgers will present her personal perspective on grant writing in a lecture-like format. She will describe her own experiences, successes and failures, and what she learned from them. Further, she will give advice on how to develop a scientific idea into a grant proposal and how to maximize chances on getting it funded. Examples of grant writing will be shared and DOs and DON’Ts established.

This will be an open discussion in which interruptions and questions will be welcome at any time.

Additionally, based on each participant’s goal, the structure of a personal grant/fellowship application will be discussed. For attendees with no clear scientific project, a fictitious idea to shape into a structure will be provided.

Second part: Each participant will present their idea and a structure of a summary of a proposal. The proposals will be discussed and suggestions for improvement made.

If you are interested in participating, please send an email for registration to sfb1381@biochemie.uni-freiburg.de until May 1st, 2022.
