We are happy to announce the Joint Lecture Series “Career Paths in Life Sciences” in winter semester 2022. In cooperation with RTG 2606, RTG 1976 and RTG 2202, SFB 1381 has organized this lecture series in which various speakers with a PhD in Natural Sciences present their career paths.

SFB 1381 PhD students and Postdocs have the opportunity to participate in a workshop on leadership and a workshop on presentation skills.

In September 2022, SFB 1381 offers a workshop on the use of Blue Native PolyAcrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (BN-PAGE) for the analysis of membrane protein complexes. It is open to SFB 1381 members willing to apply BN-PAGE for their own research projects.

SFB 1381 PI Oliver Einsle and his group have unravelled the assembly of an enzyme that detoxifies the greenhouse gas N₂O. Publication in Nature.

In a panel discussion Dr. Valérie Hilgers, Prof. Dr. Nora Vögtle and Prof. Dr. Annegret Wilde talked about their own personal experiences as women in academia. All three are SFB 1381 PIs who brought various experiences to the table: they are at different career stages and thus could reflect on a variety of career experiences.

SFB 1381 female Postdocs have the opportunity to participate in EIRA-Mentoring, a programme provided by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg. Application to the programme is possible until July 15th, 2022 and is open to female postdocs interested in becoming full professors.

In this workshop, organized by SFB 1381 and GRK 2606, SFB 1381 PI Prof. Dr. Oliver Einsle will introduce the fundamentals in structural biology and give an introduction to AlphaFold.

On June 2nd and 3rd, 2022, 23 PhD students and Postdocs took part in this year’s Young Researchers’ Retreat. Mohd Areeb describes the retreat as a great opportunity “to enjoy science and to get to know each other after a long pandemic break”. We can only agree!

In an interview, Asifa Akhtar, SFB 1381 PI and Vice Speaker, talks about diversity in the Max Planck Society. SFB 1381 undertakes various measures to promote equal opportunities for all, thereby creating a welcoming atmosphere for all researchers joining our SFB.

SFB 1381 PI Sonja-Verena Albers (Project A01) was elected as a new member of the German National Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina in May 2022.

SFB 1381 is happy to announce and host the event “Women in Science” which takes place on 29.6.2022 at 4:15 pm.

In June 2022, SFB 1381 PhD students and Postdocs are finally able to have an in-person retreat. The retreat will be taking place in Gutach-Bleibach, a small village in the Black Forest.

As a partner of Pint of Science Freiburg, we are happy to announce this year’s program. On May 9th, 10th and 11th, 2022, nine talks (in German and English) covering various topics are scheduled at Borso Bar in Freiburg.

SFB 1381 offers this online-workshop for PhD students and Postdocs who are interested in working on their skills needed for Poster Presentations. This workshop takes place in May 2022.

Congratulations to Hans-Georg Koch (Project B06), Sonja Albers (Project A01) and Matthias Boll (Project A03): their article “The missing enzymatic link in syntrophic methane formation from fatty acids” was recognized as a finalist for the 2021 Cozzarelli Prize!

Our first SFB 1381 symposium “Dynamic Organization of Cellular Protein Machineries” was held from March 9-11, 2022 in an online format.
