Modular organisation of the machinery for membrane insertion of mitochondrial beta-barrel proteins

Project Summary

The mitochondrial beta-barrel membrane proteins of the outer membrane are crucial for the cellular metabolism and for supplying mitochondrial synthesized energy molecule ATP under oxidative conditions. The beta-barrel channels require the sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) for their insertion into the outer membrane. By a combination of structural biology and functional assays this project aims to answer the basic cell biology question how SAM inserts hydrophobic beta-barrel proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane.
