Project Summary
The ribosome is a large cellular machinery that translates the genetic information into function. Originally the ribosome was considered to be an invariable entity of ribosomal proteins and rRNA that together with translation factors sustains protein synthesis. However, there is increasing evidence for ribosome heterogeneity in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells that facilitates the dynamic amendment of protein synthesis and ribosome-associated processes to different metabolic and environmental conditions. Our goal is to analyze how dynamic ribosome modifications and specialized ribosomal subpopulations determine protein homeostasis in response to different cellular signals.
